Last December 9th, members of our Eliminating Childhood Hunger Committee (ECHC) collaborated with Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign to create an opportunity for The Wills Group employees to learn how No Kid Hungry helps educate families about how they can shop for and cook healthy, nutritious meals within a $10 budget.
The Wills Group team members who attended this event had the opportunity to learn and experience first-hand how No Kid Hungry works closely with low income families to ensure they have the skills they need to stretch their food budgets and cook healthy meals for their families.
This experience included employee participation in a shopping competition at a local Giant Food store near The Wills Group. Participants were divided into 12 teams, with each team then tasked to shop for a nutritious meal for a family of 4 with a total cost that equaled $10 or less.
After the competition, each team had the chance to “pitch” their $10 meal solution to fellow participants. During the pitch, team members had to present the ingredients and nutritional benefits of the meal their team put together. All of The Wills Group team members at the event then voted to select the winning meal.
The event concluded with a fun and spirited auction that allowed individuals to buy or donate the various meals. More than $1,500 was raised and donated in support of LifeStyles of Maryland, a non-profit organization headquartered here in La Plata whose mission is to provide affordable, accessible services, activities and goods to support and encourage individuals, families, and community development. The Wills Group was thrilled to partner with No Kid Hungry and LifeStyles to create a fun and impactful day.
