Not every career in tech starts with a computer science degree. For Potros Potros, it started inside a busy Dash In store.

After joining Wills Group as a Corporate Store Manager, Potros quickly earned a reputation for strong leadership and operational know-how. But what set him apart was his problem-solver’s mindset and a desire to understand how things worked behind the scenes. That curiosity eventually turned into a career path.

Today, Potros is a Retail Systems Administrator on the Wills Group Information & Technology team, helping keep store systems across the region running smoothly. His journey reflects Wills Group’s culture of opportunity — where career growth is supported, talent is recognized, and team members are encouraged to shape their own path.

In this debut edition of our Life at Wills Group series, Potros shares what a typical day looks like in his new role, how he made the leap from store operations to IT, and what keeps him excited about the road ahead.

1. Can you walk us through a typical day in your role as a Retail Systems Administrator?

“My day-to-day involves supporting store-level systems like Point of Sale (POS) terminals, fuel controllers, pinpads, kitchen production systems, and back-office software,” Potros says.

That support often starts with troubleshooting technical issues and working closely with the help desk. He also maintains documentation, writes Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for recurring issues, and helps stage and deploy equipment for new store openings.

“I love being involved in that process,” he adds. “It’s satisfying to help make sure everything is fully ready to go from day one.”

2. How did your journey at Wills Group begin, and how has it evolved?

Potros joined Wills Group in 2021 as a Corporate Store Manager at Dash In. “I’ve always been drawn to solving problems and improving processes,” he says. “Even back then, I found myself interested in the technical side of how everything worked behind the scenes.”

After sharing his interest in technology with leadership, he was invited to shadow the IT Field Support team. The experience gave him valuable exposure to the systems behind store operations and the confidence to pursue a new path.

In 2023, he enrolled in a cybersecurity degree program to deepen his technical knowledge. Not long after, he transitioned into a full-time IT role as a Retail Systems Administrator.

“I already understood how things work on the ground, which helped me bridge the gap between the business and technical sides,” he says. “I know what store teams need to be successful because I’ve been in their shoes.”

Wills Group supports internal mobility through opportunities like shadowing and Training Tracks. These programs help employees explore roles across departments and build new skill sets that align with their goals.

3. What do you enjoy most about working at Wills Group?

“What I enjoy most is the team environment,” Potros says. “Everyone is willing to help each other out, and there’s a strong sense of collaboration across departments.”

That support has shaped his experience. “I’ve had the chance to work with some really smart, experienced people who are always open to sharing their knowledge. That’s made a big impact on me,” he adds. “And leadership here is very supportive. They trust us to take initiative, but they’re always available when guidance is needed.”

It’s a workplace where people feel empowered, but never alone — and that kind of culture, Potros says, makes all the difference.

4. Have any benefits or professional development programs impacted your growth?

“Absolutely,” Potros says. “The tuition support has made it possible for me to earn a degree in Cybersecurity while working full-time. That kind of support means a lot.”

Through Wills Group’s Education Assistance Program, employees can earn up to 100% tuition reimbursement for degrees, certifications, and even GEDs. The program supports both full- and part-time employees and rewards strong academic performance — making it possible for employees to earn a college degree completely free of debt..

In addition to his studies, Potros highlights the mentorship and support he received when transitioning into an IT role. “It showed that leadership believed in my potential,” he adds. “And it gave me the hands-on experience I needed to grow in the field.”

5. What projects are you currently working on that excite you?

“Lately, I’ve been really excited to work on the rollout of our updated store branding and systems,” he says. “I’m helping stage and set up the technology for these new sites, and it’s been an awesome experience to be part of something that’s shaping the future of our stores.”

As part of Wills Group’s Next Generation branding and store experience, select Dash In locations are being updated with new designs, menus, and systems to elevate the guest experience. For Potros, it’s about making sure every piece of store technology is ready to go, from kitchen production systems and POS terminals to back-office platforms.

“We’re also getting ready for several new site openings,” he adds. “I love being part of that growth. It feels good to know I’m setting up each store location for success from day one.”

6. How would you describe your leadership style, or how your team supports one another?

“I used to lead a team when I was running sites,” Potros says. “And my approach has always been about knowing your team, supporting them, and sharing knowledge to help everyone grow — including myself.”

Now in IT, he brings the same mindset. “If someone needs something, I want to make sure they have what they need to succeed,” he says.

At Wills Group, leadership isn’t limited to formal titles. Whether managing a team or contributing behind the scenes, employees are empowered to make a difference and support one another along the way.

7. What’s an accomplishment you’re especially proud of?

“One of the biggest was being named Store Manager of the Year during my first year with the company,” Potros says. “That meant a lot to me.”

Since moving into his IT role, Potros has contributed to several large-scale projects that have helped shape how Dash In stores operate today.

“I’m proud to have been part of major company-wide initiatives like upgrading all of our Shell locations and launching our new back-office software platform across the network,” he says. “Being trusted to take part in those big moments, and seeing the impact they had, makes me feel like I’ve really grown with the company.”

8. What advice would you give someone thinking about joining Wills Group or Dash In?

“I would tell anyone thinking about joining that it’s one of the best decisions they could make,” Potros says. “When I first joined, I didn’t expect to find such an amazing culture with smart, supportive people who want to see you succeed.”

He also points to the benefits and opportunities for career growth.

“The company offers some of the best benefits I’ve ever had, and there are always opportunities to grow if you’re willing to learn and step up,” he says.

“Whether you’re just starting out or looking to take the next step in your career, this is a place where you’ll feel valued and challenged in the best way.”
