For three decades, the Southern Maryland Food Bank has been fighting hunger by supplying emergency food to nearly 30 food pantries operating in Charles, St. Mary’s, and Calvert counties. On May 16, Wills Group had the opportunity to make an immediate, positive impact on these communities by volunteering at the Southern Maryland Food Bank, as part of our Nourishing Children & Families Signature Program.

We’re proud of the results: ten dedicated Wills Group team members assembled 150 boxes of fresh produce and 150 bags of frozen meat. Three-quarters of the food went out to churches and food banks that same day, while the remainder was distributed through the Southern Maryland Food Bank the following day.

“We’ve done so many projects out in the community, from packing food for the food bank to helping others fix up their homes. It keeps me energized and I’m excited to come to work every day, said Brooke Rieman, Senior Manager of Business Operations and Risk Management at the Wills Group. “Everybody wants to make a difference in the community. And Wills Group gives us all the tools to do that.”

Helping communities move forward by giving back

Today, 1 in 8 kids is at risk of hunger in America, according to No Kid Hungry, a national campaign committed to ending childhood hunger in the U.S. In stark terms, many households don’t have enough food for every family member to lead a healthy life.

Wills Group partners with regional and local food banks and pantries like Southern Maryland Food Bank to tackle acute needs around food insecurity, while also supporting long-term solutions to persistent food supply and distribution challenges.

The popular paid time off to volunteer policy at the Wills Group enables all of our team members to contribute to the communities we serve by working to fight food insecurity and to reimagine outdoor spaces

Echoing that sentiment, Barbara Nova, Senior Director of Food and Beverage at the Wills Group, said “from community clean up to feeding the hungry, the Wills Group understands the positive impact it can have.”

Wills Group is committed to building a better future for our neighbors and was recognized for our 2023 community engagement work by the Washington Business Journal, earning the Corporate Philanthropy in the Midsize Companies by Giving in Greater D.C. category for the third year in a row.  We’re also Certified™ by Great Place to Work® as one of the nation’s top employers for the second year in a row.
